Regional Heterogeneity of LV Wall Thickness.

چکیده
S egmental variation in left ventricular (LV) wall thickness is important in characterizing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, post-infarction remodeling, and myocardial noncompaction. In each of these disorders, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has greatly extended our understanding due to its ability to comprehensively assess LV structure, function, and myocardial composition over the entire LV chamber and myocardial volumes. In this issue of iJACC, de Marvao et al. (1) combine CMR with computational anatomy techniques to demonstrate that segmental wall thickness variation of lesser degree is also prevalent in normotensives, prehypertensives, and hypertensives. Though the patterns are similar in each category, the degree of variation and the relationship of wall thickness to systolic blood pressure (BP) vary. However, the general theme is that wall thickness and relativewall thickness tend to increase in parallel with BP in each subset with the greatest effects seen in the septum and anterior wall. The effect on relative wall thickness is greatest in mid-LV in normotensives and pre-hypertensives but shifts to basal segments of the septum and anterior wall in overt hypertensives.

The Possible Role of TNF-alpha in Physiological and Pathophysiological Cardiac Hypertrophy in Rats
Pathological cardiac hypertrophy was produced by partial abdominal aortic constriction (PAAC) for 4 wk, while physiological cardiac hypertrophy was produced by chronic swimming training (CST) for 8 wk in rats. Pentoxifylline (30 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg i.p., day-1) treatment was started three days before PAAC and CST and it was continued for 4 wk in PAAC and 8 wk in CST experimental model. The left ve...

Background Left ventricular (LV) myocardial wall thickness is influenced by non-ischemic conditions like cardiomyopathies (CMP) as well as ischemic disorders, i. e. coronary artery disease (CAD). For CMP, regional wall thickness under resting conditions has prognostic value and serves as risk predictor for future cardiovascular events. In CAD, aside from perfusion also inadequate dobutamine wal...
متن کاملRegional Heterogeneity in 3D Myocardial Shortening in Hypertensive Left Ventricular Hypertrophy: A Cardiovascular CMR Tagging Substudy to the Life Study
BACKGROUND Increased relative wall thickness in hypertensive left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) has been shown by echocardiography to allow preserved shortening at the endocardium despite depressed LV midwall circumferential shortening (MWCS). Depressed MWCS is an adverse prognostic indicator, but whether this finding reflects reduced global or regional LV myocardial function, as assessed by th...
متن کامل3D Quantitative Visualization of Altered LV wall Thickening Dynamics Caused by Coronary Microembolization
Regional heart wall dynamics has been shown to be a sensitive indicator of LV wall ischemia. Rates of local LV wall thickening during a cardiac cycle can be measured and illustrated using functional parametric mappings. This display conveys the spatial distribution of dynamic strain in the myocardium and thereby provides a rapid qualitative appreciation of the severity and extent of the ischemi...
متن کاملRegional nonuniformity of normal adult human left ventricle.
Regional nonuniformity is a feature of both diseased and normal left ventricles (LV). With the use of magnetic resonance (MR) myocardial tagging, we performed three-dimensional strain analysis on 87 healthy adults in local cardiac and fiber coordinate systems (radial, circumferential, longitudinal, and fiber strains) to characterize normal nonuniformities and to test the validity of wall thicke...
